Product Description

The Brantford Canal was completed in 1848 and opened to great fanfare as it allowed freight and passengers to be brought right in the downtown area increasing trade and attracting new businesses. It also encouraged manufacturers to begin making goods that could be sold worldwide. Brantford became a port of entry in 1852, but as the railway system became more established in the years that followed the waterway business decreased. Part of the canal remains to this day but the downtown section was covered over in 1930 and built upon. Tae Hislop was very excited to discovered this rarely seen photo of the canal in the Brant Historical Museum and juxtaposition it next to the buildings that can be seen on Colborne Street after the Southside buildings were torn down. The canal is a unique and almost secret part of brantford’s history.
